Mend Mixer Tap Bathroom Bath

Bath mixer tap problem?

The mixer tap on my bath won't work properly. I have to push a 'collar'-type thing down in order to switch from bath to shower setting. Now the sliding collar is completely stuck and I think it needs to come off to perhaps fit a new valve. But how?
