peugeot 206 1.4 hdi engine management light problem?

I have a Peugeot 206 1.4 hdi 2003..
the engine management light has started to come on and the power seems to disappear when you are trying to drive.
The engine management lights goes off and can be off for quite some time then comes on again and I am hoping that someone out there can help me in my quest in finding an answer to my problem.

Have you checked your air filter? If blocked or very dirty it could cause the engine to run too rich.

If it is dirty renew it. The EML should go out after a few days of normal running as the unburnt hydrocarbons get burnt off the sensors.

If not the air filter, try a tank full of Shell V Power or BP Ultimate diesel next time you fill up, and give the car a decent run.
