Mend Mountfield 604 Engine Battery Starter Motor

my lawnflight 604 ride on?

when I switched the engine off the starter motor would not stop.
I had to disconnect the battery, after I tried to reconnect battery but I stopped it was sparks coming off as soon I connected.
Tis was not the normal sort of spark you get when connecting to battery.....
