how can i get a tighter stitch?

I have a bernina matic electronic type 289 sewing machine.When i sew the top stitch is very loose,i have tryed evrything but it just wouldnt do.I am very confused since i didnt get the user guide with it.Just wondering where i could download the full user guide from.
