Mend Peugeot 206 Light Ideas Gauge

red stop light on dash and temperature goes to hot intermitantly any ideas?

the red stop light on the dash comes on and the temperature gauge goes up to hot intermitantly if i stop for a couple of minutes it goes off and will be ok for the rest of the day the car is a peugeot 206 1400cc 2004
