My Hotpoint WT540 Aquarius washing machine has a fault?

The washing/spin cycle does not finish and just stops during a rinse. The on/off light flashes and can't be cancelled unless I switch off at the mains. I can usually then turn the dial to just a slow spin and this will complete so I can open the door. Any idea what the problem is?
