Try this simple cast on.
Push forward alternate needles to working position.
Make sure the carriage is set to knit.
Take the carriage across once with tension set on 1.
Each needle in working position should have a loop of yarn.
Hang the cast on comb on to the loops between the needles.
Push forward the in between needles.
Set the carriage tension to one that is suitable for your yarn (as a guide try 6 for 4 ply).
Take the carriage across to the opposite side firmly and slowly.
You should now have a stitch formed in the first needles you pushed forward and a loop on the alternate needles. Continue knitting - not too fast and the stitches should form properly.
