Mend Sony RDR-HDC500 Recorder Help

How can I fix my Sony RDR-HDC500 recorder?

My recorder has a message which comes up when I try to turn it on - the message is "this function cannot be used now".
Then after a while the recorder turns off. Any help would be great. Not sure if a child has touched something they shouldn't have
