406 intermittent fan. all power lines ok. Told I need a fan speed control unit. What does it look like and where is it?

sounds like the reostat to control speed as burnt out .they are fit inside the heater tubes on most peugeots and are just a twist out and replace.on 206 are £25 on 307 £50 never done a 406
