starting problems with my rover 25 1.4 03 plate?

some days my car wil start first time and other times it wil go to start and cut out and its takes a few turns of the key to start then when it starts runs fine alday.. any ideas please

Can anyone please advise. I tried starting my Rover 25 (03 reg) this afternoon after completing a 100 mile journey with no response. When I attempt to turn the engine over nothing happens however the usual indicator lights appear on the display. I have tried turning the ignition on & off a number of times to no avail. When I pop the bonnet there also appears to be a faint high pitch noise coming from the engine. Please help.
