Mend Faber Fire Though

Faber fire - hot though fire not on - only pilot light?

Had fire for number of years and when fire off pilot light always on - no problems. This morning room very hot, fire off, pilot light on but top of fire and chimney breast very hot to touch. Have turned pilot light off and cooling down. How can there be such heat when fire not on, from pilot light? What do we need to do?
