how do you get the recliner rod through the bushings on a Lane recliner?

I have replaced the two plastic bushings on my Lane recliner. but I cannot get the rod that attaches to the lever through the bushings, I was told that they are all the same size regardless of year or type. I'm wondering if there is some trick that I am missing, please help thanks
