Mend Sony RDR-HXD560 Not Switch

Sony DVD Recorder RDR-HXD560 will not switch on!?

My DVD recorder displays "welcome" then can be heard making a whirring noise and then switches off. Unable to do a reset as it never progresses far enough to show anything on the TV screen. Is there a reset that I can do manually by pushing buttons on the machine?
