Start Dishwasher ?

I have a Kenmore 665.15772990 dishwasher. When I try to start it it makes several clicking sounds like the motor is trying to start but after a few tries it stops and a red light comes on on the start button. It sounds like something is jamming the motor. see below.

Further to this occurrence; I removed the arm and filter and then manually turned the impeller and started the unit. It made a loud grinding sound while pumping out the standing water. In a minute it stopped so I repeated the action several times and eventually it ran. I put the unit through a cycle and it ran with a loud grinding sound which ended before the first wash cycle. It appears to be working now. Can you please provide some incite as to what happened?
