Panasonic TX-28DK1 Quintrix?

Any idea what might be wrong with this:

Switch on at the mains at goes into standby. Press a button on the remote to switch on ... it sounds like it goes to switch on ... it then beeps 10 times (very high pitch and sounds like a bird tweeting!) and then switches itself off. The screen remains completely blank throughout the process. There is no sound apart from the bleeps which incidentally seem to be coming from a component inside the TV as opposed to the audio system. Can I lob it away or is it worth a screwdriver by someone? :)
