New Starter motor fitted worked now stopped?

Hi I have recently fitted a re-con starter motor to my 1996 Renault Clio 1.4RT. It worked although a bit noisey but has since stopped turning over the engine. Someone has surgested I have fitted it in the wrong position but i can't see this as it has a locating lug and all the bolts line up fine?
Any ideas appriciated!!!

did you check ring gear on flywheel for worn or missing teeth? when starter was removed!
