indesit wm12x doesnt go through wash cycle & wont take softener? ?

Hi we have a WM12X - When put on a load either a 40* wash or 90* the fabric conditioner doesnt seem to be taken from the dispenser & the cycle doesnt go through fully. It seems to take detergent, fill with water and then churn the washing with pauses, It stays doing this churning until you manually turn it off & reset dial to drain setting. I put the washing on the other day & when I returned after a couple of hours it was still churning round, pausing & churning again!? Also when finished the washing smells of dirty water? Please help.
