baxi solo 50/4 PF boiler system, heating does not switch on, although when ?

The water heats up, i.e. fan starts and boiler fires up. But when I turn on the heating nothing happens and the room thermosat is on, water pump does not start and the boiler does not fire up. Has this got something to do with the thermostat, is this the phial that slides into the boiler????
