Mend Smeg DW1612C Dishwasher Error

SMEG DW1612C Dishwasher keeps pumping at start of cycle even when empty?

My dishwasher has just started pumping when you start a programme and then pausing and then pumping again until it errors. Error code indicates not emptying properly although i have taken the pump off and checked the pipe which is clear. Can you suggest what else i can check?
