dishwasher stuck on wash cycle?

my dishwasherseems to be stuck on the wash cycle. when we first start it, the timer says138 minutes and counts down to1 and stays there all the time is in the wash cycle. doesnt ggo to rinse or dry and once it counts down to 1 it just stays in the wash cycle for ever. help. i can cancel and put on rinse and drain cycle for 9 minutes and that works allright. light wash does the same as regular cycle counts down to 1 minute and stays running
