vw golf tailgate lock not unlocking!?

the rod which opens the latch may have snapped or seized up, or the solenoid which moves it may have broken. From inside the boot you can remove the black plastic trim from the tailgate but you have to undo one + head screw where you put your hand into the recess for closing the tailgate. Once the screw has been removed, the plastic can be prised off and access to the locking / latching mechanism. The thin metal bar unlocks the trunk latch.
