my van just cut out and then lost all water but didn't leak anything?

my van cut out and lost all water but no water leaked out. i replaced the battery with a new one an checked oil which was fine. then started van which started ok apart from the terrible clunking an the oil gauge popping out so cut engine out straight away. but then it wouldn't start again.
