Dimmer switch?

Existing dimmer has died and it's casing is around 1/2 inch deep like surface fit switch connected to existing metal pattress box burried in the wall.
I don't want to have to remove the existing metal box and cut the hole deeper if I can avoid it.

Couldn't find the same type only flush fit is there a switch backing plate to make the new one stand off the same? or the alternative I've thought of is to make a plate out of PVC cladding, but being softer plastic would this be suitable material? as I believe dimmer switches give out mild heat or so I'm told.

Why is it you never end up with a straight forward job.

If you come back to see this.
Being honest if I had half a brain I would have thought of that so will be trying it out later hopefully the fixing holes for securing screws line up then thanks my problem solved.

Of course as 'er in doors' likes the look of the cover plate on the new dimmer.....brushed steel effect it may be a battle to change it. The old cover plate is off white so might have fight on me hands. What's a divorce cost nowadays?.
More brain concentraction was ensuring the dimmer wasn't operating the 10 low voltage lights over and above it's 400w capacity.

why dont you just remove the faulty dimmer,(pull off knob, nut underneath,)then buy new dimmer ,remove from plate, and fit it on your excisting plate,
