Omnistep, (double) is loose?

When I drop the step, (electric) it seems to drop the last 3/4 inches with a clatter and when it is closed it seems to have a lot of play on it which causes it to rattle when driving. Would be really pleased if someone could advise me about this problem. e.g. can I fix this myself if I get the plastic cover off? Thanks in advance
