Answer A:
Vw golf and Polo's suffer this problem quite often but in order to find the actual cause you will need to have a diagnostic test which will give you a fault code for the relevant problem as it could be caused by any of the following:
1) Faulty brake light switch (brake lamps don't illuminate or /intermittent.
2) Faulty coil pack ( Misfire or loss of engine power.)
3) Failed clutch pedal sensor
4) Vacuum leak from one of the small vacuum hoses
Remove the plastic engine cover, and examine all the rubber/plastic vacuum hoses. These will be coming off the inlet manifold, and go to various components, such as the brake servo, and various emission control valves. Carefully check these hoses, bending them, to make sure there are no splits or cracks, particularly at each end.
When the engine is cold, the rubber hoses will be more rigid, and less likely to flex. However, when the engine is hot, the rubber becomes much softer, more pliable, and much easier to flex - thus opening up any crack.
Answer B:
EPC means Electronic Power Control. This basically means there is no accelerator cable from the gas pedal to the throttle valve unit-power control is done electronically through sensors and other electronic devices, just to put it simple for your understanding.
Whenever any of the sensors incl. the brake light switch develops a fault, the EPC light comes on (normally off when driving unless there is a fault) to warn you of a potential fault. You may experience driveability problem during such times.
As the fault is purely electronic type, you will need a scan tool from a competent shop to tell what fault codes are in the system and the required remedy. You could do a basic check first by watching if the brake lights work or not?
