Mend John Deere 170 Lawn Mower Safety Switch Engine

pto will not engage on john deere 170?

The pto on john deere lawn mower model 170 will not engage. I have heard of there being saftey switches on the jd's. It is electrical pto type. After flipping the pto switch the engine shuts off aswell. I am confrused. lol
