bandit losing power and making horrid noise ?

i have a 1996 600 bandit and when i have taken it out for the last time it went about 7 or 8 miles then made a horrid weak noise as if it was only firing on two then i loast all power and it cut out and wouldnt start. then after about 10 mins cooling time it started again and went for a further mile and the same thing happened again and again. could this be due to the coil over heating? if not could you please help.................

the best thing to do is check which cylinders its dropping when its hot by pulling the ht leads off one at a time.if its electrical like a coil or pick up then 1+4 and 2+3 run the same coil and pick up so try pulling a ht lead of each cylinder.use a pair of insulated grips or you will get a belt from it,when you can estblish what ht cap being removed makes no differene to the bad running then your half way to fixing it.for instance its running crappy and you pull no 1 ht cap of (left hand side)the bikes engines speed doesnt alter+this cyclinder isnt doing anything if it does alter like die completeley then it WAS running on that one and so on.

Its possible and sounds like it. I would test them. HT leads and plug check and change as well. However before you do that check usual stuff like oil etc etc. When did you last change oil filter and air filters?
