technika vga webcam?

i just bought a technika vga webcam headset and followed the instructions, baring in mind im not a novice at comps...i could not get the webcam to capture or record images or just plainly view ur friends. ive read forums on the problems but as my comp is about 5yrs old, wit windows xp home edition installed, i was wondering if i needed a dvd program driver. otha webcam i have bought in the past have neva required it.
