Repairing an old-fashioned, slatted garden seat with cast iron ends?
The cast iron ends of a 20 year old, slatted garden bench are in good nick but the slats were always poor quality and have now disintegrated. The item was bought in a local garden centre as a 'flatpack' and not particularly expensive (probably made in China) and I cannot supply the brand name. The ends are so nice it would be a pity not to try and re-use them. Would it be possible to buy new slats? Also, any hints on removing the old bolts?
Buy timber to the nearest size and trim, drill and shape accordingly. Dress with teak oil. You will not be able to buy ready-made slats.
Bash out any fixings and buy new ones from a decent hardware shop. Stainless Steel is more expensive but it will not corrode - Galvanized will be OK too.
