My Whirlpool Washer (SM 8280869) Won't "Agitate"?

My Whirlpool Washer (SM 8280869) Won't "Agitate".
It spins and drains,no problem.
There is a "ratchety" sound when agitator is moved by hand.

any suggestions are most appreciated.
