how can i fix my whirlpool frost free freezer ?

my whirlpool frost free freezer will only work on fast freeze . if i turn it down a little bit food defrosts . alarm light does not flash unless i turn temp control knob off then on again so only realise there is a problem when it is too late and everything is defrosted model afg823nf
