97 passat... sticky accelerator ?

hi !... since owning my car i've noticed that theres a two second delay from when i release the accelerator to when the revs idle... this is annoying, specially when changing gear as the car continues to rev, even worse when going up steep hills or on harsh acceleration. i've tried greasing the accelerator to no avail. i can actually feel the peddle hit my foot after two seconds. i'd be greatfull for the help. thank you!
