Mend John Deere LX172 Battery Light Stays

how can i fix lx 172 john deere?

1993 lx 172 battery light stays on when the switch is off i can unplug the brown wire going to positive battery wire and light goes out engine will not start with the wire unplugged i have no problems with mower when running but when the brown wire is left plugged up it will drain battery thanks
