how can i replace my shower hose?

I've bought a new shower hose and it fits the shower head but not into the base unit of the shower. It's as though it needs a male/female fitting not just female each end - but nowhere seems to sell that so I'm confused! It needs to screw into the base. I cant seem to get the fitting off the original hose that did screw into the base...please help!!
