Pull Cord won't Retract?

I have a Murray push lawnmower with a Tecumesh 6.0 HP engine. Recently the pull cord (starter cord) has stopped retracting. I have to remove the cooling shroud and manually wind the cord up again. This is an obvious pain when the engine is cold and requires multiple pulls to get it started and stay started. BTW, the motor does run fine after a few attempts. Thanks in advance
