Mend Samsung RS2556SH Making Loud Noise

How can I fix my Samsung Refrigerator model RS2556SH?

My Samsung side-by-side fridge is making a loud whirring noise, but when I open the fridge the noise comes to a sputtering stop. It starts again a few seconds after being closed. Noise sounds like it's coming from the back of the unit. The fridge temperature has been flashing at 36 degrees. Its still cold though. The freezer side seems to be fine. Any ideas what this problem could be? Should I get a repair technician or is there something simple I should try first?
