240 V not working?

Hi

I got a second hand RM 212. It works ok on 12 V but as soon as I turn the switch to 240 V it trips the house. All the wiring appears to be ok. I have removed the element and cant find a problem using a multi meter. If it needs another one does anyone know where to get one.
