Mend Smell Coming Open

can i fix a surge protector?

I have purchased a surge protector. When I connected it to my computer, there is a wiring smell coming from it. Can I open it & fix/clean it. I think drops of water might have spilled inside the surge protector when trying to claen the dust of it with a moist towel.
