electrical fault?

have an electrical prob on a bmw r 1100rt when you switch on the head lights they stay on for about 30/40 secs then cut out can anyone help

The problem sounds like the headlight relay is not staying switched over inside when the lights are on if it does that after this time span.i would replace the relay before i did anything else.
