steering has suddenly gone heavy?

Had this happen to a volvo 240 estate once; the power steering hose was leaking which caused a fluid drop, so you could check that. OR the drive belt could be slipping, (this will most likely cause a squeal though) or might have broken or come off or there may have water in the power steering bottle, again it happened to me, (a "mechanic" thought it was the expansion bottle!). Hope this helps.

Check your power steering fluid level may need topping up
also see if there is a leak
