smeg dw1409c dishwasher not working?

i have a smeg dw1409c inbuilt dishwasher. it's stopped working (right when i filled it!). when doors opened, operating buttons are at the top of door, as it were. the on/off button is on the left and on the right are 5 red lights and the 'programming' button. pressing the program button scrolls the red lights to decide which program is required.

whichever program i choose, when i close the door, theres a short beep, then theres a 'brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr' noise from the dishwasher, and after a while theres a long beep and the furthest left light is flashing, as well as the original program light is still on.

i'm sure this is a fault code for something or other but i don't have a user manual to help. does anyone recognise this fault and can anyone lend a hand? i fixed my oven with assistance from this site, so i have high hopes!
