what are the things that could go wrong with a vauxhall combo alternator if it does not charge the battery,

Brushes worn down, blown diodes, regulator faulty. IMHO the pulley is too big and gives no charge at idle. A friend is having a lot of grief with his even after paying £150 for having a brand new alternator fitted. Just can't get the right staff anymore. Check all earths as charging via the exhaust pipe etc won't be too good.

basically get a exchange/reconned unit 12 months of free hassle. why

brushes worn out, no charge.
regulator failure, under/over voltage.
diode failure low charging,leakage voltage.
