I have a G.E. Cassette player/recorder, model 3-5152A. All functions work well with the exception of record. When ever I attempt to record, the result is a recording which is discernible, but with loud electronic background static.
Probably not worth having it repaired but before deciding it may pay you to take the cover off and clean the tape path and recording heads - meths and a piece of kitchen roll.
Then see how it goes...
