Mend Ford Focus Lock Repair Problem

How can I sort this door catch problem?

The front passenger door on my 98 Ford Focus, does not operate properly, meaning that I can't close the door. I have had a look at the door catch/lock in the door and it appears that the catch is stuck in the closed position meaning that it will not close on the striker bar on the door pillar. Any thoughts on a remedy for this??
