No red lights were mentioned, if your disks have stopped reading its very simply a laser fault (very common) if you are in warranty then send her back to be fixed, failing that no harm in having a look, there are plenty of sites out there that help with laser changes (very simple and very cheap from E-bay) your 360 should then work a treat.

Are there any blinking red lights on the front of your console?? I don't know if you have heard of the 3 red rings error on the xbox 360s. Its a very common problem for them. It usually starts with the console freezing or unable to read disc messages. I would check out a repair guide.
