the switch that you turn for temp does not operate any cables and does feel quite free to turn i suspect that you are having problems with heater temperature-if so it will poss be temp control valve fastened to bulkhead very common fault,will need replacing.

If it's like the older ones as I suspect it is they have the same fitting as an oven knob and the bit you turn snaps where it pushes on.Pull the dial off and you will see the problem,glue it back together(might work)or use one of the other knobs for now.
