BT studio 1100 - wont connect to base?

Hello I bought a BT studio off ebay and it was brand new never used. I tried original batteries and wouldnt connect to base - its a single hanset. So bought new batteries and tried them and still no joy.

Can this be mended in any way, read a few things off the internet and its not an uncommon problem. But feel I may just have one of these unlucky handsets! I hope for a quick response or else if its no good will have to contact ebay seller and complain! :-(
