How do you remove a sock from the washing machine tub?

Last night my washer decided to eat a sock which is now stuck between the tub and the drum, is there any way of removing the sock myself without pulling the machine apart? I have an Electrolux EWX14540W washer/dryer.

I have filled the washer with water in the hope that when it drains the sock follows the flow of water into the fluff filter but it hasn't. I daren't leave the machine running as the drum doesn't rotate freely and am weary of it putting a strain on the motor. Any tips will be much apreciated.
