Whirpool Washer LSR 733B won't spin out?

Whirpool Washer LSR 733B will not activate spin cycle - won't spin out. I'm getting this info 2nd hand from my 85 yr old mother 250 miles away! I did see post re power plug being lose will interupt cycles and we will check that. Washer is 14 yrs old.
