How do I get rid of black square on curtis mathis tv?

My very large, heavy curtis mathis (about 5 years old, don't know the make/model, must be on the back and I can't move the tv to look at it) is displaying a black square the demensions of the menu box that blocks out most of the tv veiwing area. If I push the p-std button or the menu button it will go away but continues to come back. Any ideas why this is happening and how I can fix it? Thanks

try this first. go to menu, setup,close caption,make sure your tv is not set on text, if it is uncheck it. this will cause your problem. If text is not check then your tv is in child lock mode.Go to program,child lock,you will have to enter three numbers to unlock this ,If you have forgotten code enter 777 this will erace key numbers. hope this get you going again.

Turn off captions. I had the exact same problem on a curtis mathis and I just figured it out!! Hope this helps.
